Utah gymnastics: Utes enjoy down time before ramping up again for Regionals

Members of Utah's gymnastics team will get back to work in the coming days to prepare for the NCAA regionals on April 1 after a few days of rest and light work to let their bodies recover.

The fourth-ranked Utes are the top seed in the Fayetteville, Ark., regional, where they will compete against No. 9 Denver, No. 16 Cal, No. 21 Auburn, No. 27 Arkansas and No. 28 Central Michigan.

The Utes, who won the Pac-12 title with a season-high 197.925, continue to put their focus on clean landings, the one area in which they feel they can improve, Utah co-coach Megan Marsden said. The Utes are using practice competitions and other means to focus on the landings.

"They enjoy competition among themselves, and it helps to have a reason and purpose at this point in the year to keep it fresh," Marsden said.

The good news is the Utes feel they can focus on the details because their training has been solid throughout the season. If anything, the coaches are toeing the line between pushing the team hard enough but making sure it gets rest, too.

"This team gets up emotionally for competition and in a situation they were in, where they were as high as they were and performed the way they did, it would be a mistake to have expectations they could come back quickly and pound out routines clear into next week," Marsden said. "We will come back with some hard workouts, but this team has proven it does best with a light workout before the meet so they have fresh legs. We've noticed that is when we have some of our best performances."

Injury report

Vault specialist Shannon McNatt, who hyperextended her knee at the Pac-12 Championships, is benefiting from rest and is recovering from the injury, Marsden said.

McNatt, who scored 9.325 when she landed stiffly, is considered a valuable member of the team even though she is only in the vault lineup. She is one of the few Utes who can perform a 10.0 vault and is the No. 1 backup on several events.

The Utes want to be careful with her recovery and may not use her at regionals with the hopes she could be available for nationals in case she is needed not only in the vault lineup but elsewhere.

Floor lineup focus

The Utes haven't decided whether to use MaKenna Merrell or Kari Lee in the floor lineup for regionals, although Lee seems to have a slight edge.

Lee has competed the past two meets, scoring 9.875 at Georgia and 9.675 at the Pac-12 meet, where she stepped out of bounds. Marsden attributed that mistake to adrenalin.

"She didn't handle it perfectly," Marsden said. "The upside is when she nails it, it's a great routine and we have plenty of preparation time to get her ready."

Swiss Open : HS Prannoy loses in QF

Defending champion H S Prannoy was knocked out of the men’s singles competition following a straight-game loss to China’s Shi Yuqi in the quarterfinals of the USD 120,000 event. Fifth seed Prannoy, who had beaten Yuqi at the Badminton Asia Team Championships last year, failed to produce his best game and went down 19-21 11-21 to the second seeded Chinese, who had reached the finals at All England last week. Earlier, fourth seeded Indian mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy also had suffered a 19-21 17-21 loss to fifth seeded Chinese duo of Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui. The 21-year-old Yuqi, who had beaten Prannoy at the Indonesian Masters 2015, opened a slender 11-9 lead at the break of the opening game. The Indian then surged to a 18-13 advantage only to let the Chinese claw his way back to pocket the first game. In the second game, Yuqi was more dominant as he broke off at 7-7 to distance himself from the Indian and eventually seal his place in the semi

Champions League draw: Real Madrid Vs Bayern Munich in QF

The road to a Champions League record for Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti will go through his old club — defending champion Real Madrid. When Ancelotti fulfilled Madrid's quest for the "Decima" — a record-extending 10th European Cup title — in 2014, he joined a select group of five coaches to win the competition with two different clubs. He also coached AC Milan to two Champions League . Ancelotti's new team will host his previous club in Munich in the first leg of the quarterfinals on April 12. The return match will be played in Madrid six days later. "Matches against Real are obviously special for me," Ancelotti said. "It'll be exciting for me to go back to Madrid." Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was Ancelotti's assistant for the 2014 title, and won a Champions League of his own last May to cap his coaching debut season. "Our relationship is like that of a master and apprentice," Zidane said. Also in Friday's dra

WHICH MATCH-SHORTENING IDEAS MAKE SENSE, AND WHICH DON'T

Constantly in tennis there is talk about ways to speed up matches. This month, the ITF board approved an idea to make Davis Cup matches two-out-of-three sets long, a proposal that will be voted on at the organization’s annual meeting in August. A recent Sports Illustrated article proposed doing away with ball-bouncing before serves. And for years, there has been talk about playing let serves, a step already in place in Mylan World Team Tennis and the college game. Much as I love the traditions of tennis, I’m also a child of tennis boom, of tiebreakers, yellow balls, multi-colored clothing and further innovations. But I’ll admit to being uncertain about many of these proposed ideas. A few thoughts: When it comes to eliminating five-set matches – particularly in a one-off weekend such as Davis Cup – I’m torn. One of the most dramatic things in tennis is to watch a player try to finish off an opponent in five sets – only to see it then head to an even more dramatic fifth set. T
